If you want to talk about super long tail games, look at The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. The PSP version was released in Japan on October 28, 2006 and the initial shipment was a mere 18,000 units.

Fast forward to seven years in the future and The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky FC racked up more than 500,000 units sold. Not sure if international sales are part of this figure since Xseed and Ghostlight published Trails overseas.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC will be released next year in English on PSP and PC care of Xseed.

Nihon Falcom announced today that it has three games currently in development. The first is a sequel of the successful The Legend of Heroes: Sen no Kiseki, that was released in Japan this September. It’ll hit the shelves next year for PS3 and PS Vita.

According to Falcom the sequel will improve on the first game considerably, especially enhancing the combat system and ease of operation-
A Second game is more mysterious, defined as “giant” (or “super large ” literally translated), but nothing is known about it yet. A third game is a social title for smartphones.
Below you can see a piece of character artwork and four screenshots of the Sen no Kiseki sequel, two pieces of artwork of the mysterious “giant” game, and a screenshot of the game for smartphones.
Could the “giant” game be for PS4? Falcom’s President Toshihiro Kondo did say in an interview that he wants to “challenge” Sony’s new platform after all.

How A Team Of Two People Is Bringing Us 2014's Largest JRPG(Trails in the Sky:SC)

Carpe Fulgur actually started working on the script in 2011, not long after the release of the first chapter. For two years, both XSEED and Dice kept the deal secret. They had to. Nothing was finalised. And as they kept plugging away at the script, they didn’t even know for sure if anyone would even see it.

It was the success of XSEED’s Ys action-RPGs on Steam that convinced the publisher that Trails 2 could be a feasible release. Instead of just releasing the second Trails on PSP, like originally planned, they would put it on Steam, too. By releasing the game on Valve’s huge distribution platform, XSEED could reach enough of a potential audience to make the investment worthwhile.

“For a long time there was a little uncertainty if the project would actually go forward, even after the two Ys games came out,” Dice said. “We had to be sure they’d sell enough to justify working on other titles, and to prove that XSEED could sell PC titles — which, by the way, they can.”

Dice, who had worked with Steam before, helped connect XSEED to Valve for Ys Origin and Ys: The Oath in Felghana, which quickly became two of XSEED’s biggest sellers ever. Good news for anyone looking forward to SC. If the Ys games hadn’t sold, “Trails wouldn’t have happened,” Dice told me.

But the games did well, and SC is happening. The script is almost done, Dice says — in fact, they’re totally done with the main story.

“We are getting the script inserted into the game right now on the PC version so that we can see what works and what doesn’t,” Dice said. “The sidequests and NPCs and whatnot are also getting pretty close to done. We’ve got everything outside of the towns basically done at this point.”

Comforting news for anyone who’s seen the insane size of SC’s script and wondered just how anyone could translate it. And yeah, it’s a huge endeavour, but Dice says they’ve been working six or seven hours per day for the past two years to get SC together (Another fun fact: Dice says a big chunk of the script is actually repeated text used for multiple versions of the same scene — like, say, meeting a character in the plaza as opposed to meeting them at the city entrance.)

Now that they’re closer to release — XSEED is hoping to get both versions of SC out next summer — I asked if they’re working extra “crunch” hours to get things done.

“We aren’t actually crunching,” Dice said. “We don’t want to crunch on Trails partially because if you really tried to crunch all the way through Trails, you die. You would die. It would take your life, either through pure exhaustion or through being driven to suicide. I’m only partially joking here.”

Falcom ended the year by revealing that they’re working on a sequel to The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Flash, and also teased a new mystery project. Company president Toshihiro Kondo shared the little he’s allowed to on the upcoming games in an interview in last week’s issue of Famitsu magazine.

Kondo starts out by saying that 2013 was a challenging year for Falcom, as they released their first original PlayStation 3 and multiplatform title at the same time, in The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Flash. As a result, they won several awards for the game and all the hard work that was put into its development.

As for what happens next, Kondo says that he and the rest of Falcom will be aiming to work harder and come up with something even better.

Falcom President Talks Trails in The Flash Sequel And Mystery Project screenshot

Famitsu asks what kind of game the recently announced sequel to Trails in the Flash will be like.

“I can’t reveal anything about the game’s content, but I can say that things you’ve wondered about the previous title, and other mysteries will be revealed,” answers Kondo. “As far as the timeline goes, the game will start immediately after the end of Trails in the Flash, and right around the final stage of Trails of Blue (Ao no Kiseki).”

“Characters who didn’t previously participate in fights are expected to be playable characters this time around,” adds Kondo.

In Falcom’s recently teased images, we got to see one that shows what appears to be an adventurer facing a giant dragon. Famitsu asks if it might be a new Ys title.

“Again, I can only answer that question by saying ‘it’s a secret’ for now,” says Kondo with a laugh. “I can’t even say what platform it’ll be on, but we’re thinking about making it in a way where we could have it reach out to as many players as possible.”

Continues Kondo, “Since it’s going to be a major new title, the staff are putting more effort than ever into its development. We’d like to be able to announce the latest news on it as soon as possible.”

Finally, Famitsu asks the Falcom president to share his thoughts of going into the year 2014.

“Firstly, going into its 10-year anniversary, we’d like to give it our all to please fans with the sequel to Trails in the Flash, which will also include things we couldn’t add to the previous game, and the staff are working hard to make it happen,” says Kondo.

“Again, aside from that, I’d like to use the challenging mindset and know-how we cultivated from Trails in the Flash, to spread out more towards console games, as we widen our horizon along with the future development of Falcom’s content,” he concludes.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Flash’s sequel is currently in development for PlayStation 3 and Vita.

ENGLISH VERSION OF THE LEGEND OF HEROES: TRAILS IN THE SKY SC GETS DELAYED

In a move that should be unsurprising to anyone who’s followed the game in the slightest bit, XSEED announced today that The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC English release will be delayed. Many of us have suspected this, as there has been very little in the way of news or updates regarding the PSP and PC title for quite some time now, however, today’s confirmation from XSEED makes it official.

Again, Trails in the Sky SC has been rocked by several delays already, thus this comes somewhat expectantly; still, that doesn’t make it any less heart-breaking. This is all especially frustrating when taking into consideration the announcement of Pier Solar HD’s delay, which was revealed over just this past weekend. It seems that 2014, or at least the summer of 2014, just simply isn’t a good year for games to hit their intended launch window.

The Legend Of Heroes: Trails In The Sky Second Chapter Has A Cat Speech Dictionary
Xseed is still working with Carpe Fulgur to localize The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter. Falcom’s RPG is slated for release this winter on PSP via the PlayStation Network Store and PC. Like the first game, Trails in the Sky SC has a ton of text including an in-game newspaper with different issues to read as the story progresses and a cat-speech dictionary.

While you’re waiting for the epic sequel, check out The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky for PC. This version has Steam achievements, faster load times, support for different screen resolutions (HD, full screen, and wide screen), clearer fonts, and dynamic lighting in dungeons. Players will also be able to turn English voices and Retry Offset, a function that lowers battle difficulty if you get defeated, on or off. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is 15% off for its launch.

Es gibt ein Update zur TitS 2 Lokalisation.
Ein Gaf user:
The sooner you accept that it's never coming, the better off you'll be.

Darauf antwortet Tom (arbeitet für Xseed)
I love how people assume that just because we haven't sent out any press releases for a while, cleeeeearly it must be canceled! ;)

The game is just a beast, but it's coming along well. Editing is nearly complete, and QA will be beginning soon (probably right after the holidays). Now, mind you, QA is going to take a LOT of time -- most sizable RPGs get 2-3 weeks bare minimum, but this game has more content than like, 6 sizable RPGs, so it's going to be a many-month process.

The end result will definitely be worth the wait, though.

Denke mal vor Sommer 2015 dürfte es soweit sein:)

We're definitely not just going to call it quits after SC, either. I mean, we still have to figure out HOW we're going to tackle the rest of the series, but we have every intention of at least trying. And not just on PC, if we can help it.
