Forza Motorsport / Horizon / Turn10

Armutszeugnis..

Xbox One Force Feedback Racing Wheel will not be released before Christmas this year, it has been revealed.

Originally scheduled for this holiday season, a MadCatz representative told Digital Spy that it will be likely released "soon after" the festive period.
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/...cing-wheel-wont-be-released-by-christmas.html

Let me tell you something from the perspective of a wheel developer.

Of course we would have been happy to start developing this wheel earlier as we are in close contact with MS sice 2005 already but making such a wheel is actually much more complicated than expected.

MS is using a special USB and input protocol (XID) but more important they decided to use a completely different method of generating FF effects.

On the PC or PS3 FF effects are created in the console and the console only sends out Force commands to the motor (left, right and how strong). This consumes some CPU power.

Therefore MS decided to put a lot of pre-defined FF commands into the IC of the wheel and the console sends something like ("play FF effect #24" = "shaking while driving over rough surface").

This allows the game developer to use more CPU power for graphics and other stuff. And actually the very first FF controllers on PC were using this method as well.

So far the the theory. As programming such commands is difficult for the game developers there is a tendency that many game developers go back using the same force effects as on the PC as a simple Force effect is also just a command (e.g. "play FF effect #1" = "move wheel to left").

But FF is relatively new to the 360 so I am sure that Turn10 will implement it on Forza3 even better than on Forza 2.

MS is charging reasonable royalties but the investment into developing new electronics is huge and also tricky. And there is absolutely no way to make an existing wheel work. Period.

The co-operation with MS is really great and they support us a lot so we will be able to show you a working sample of our wheel with mass production electronics around Christmas.
http://forums.forzamotorsport.net/forums/permalink/2142945/2145277/ShowThread.aspx#2145277
I might want to add that MS is different to its competitor in this respect. The "other" console is more open and flexible. This allows 3rd party hardware developers to create new controllers like controllers for first person shooters, light guns etc. On the other hand if there is no standard or the standard is set by the peripheral maker there is the big chance that not all games will work as they should.

MS has incredible detailed specs and everybody, game and hardware developer, has to strictly follow it.

At the end of the day it the choice of the consumer if he prefers an open platform with potential compatibility issues or if he wants to have the guarantee that his things are working without problems but with a limited choice of controllers.

I can see good reasons to go either way but it would be interesting to start a discussion about that.

BTW: We are currently also building a wheel for Turn10 which should arrive in January. I look forward to work closely with you guys and I think your game will be the first which can fully take advantage of all features of our wheel.

Reddit Leak hatte bisher recht:
by the way, for those of you that may not have believed the reddit dude (we need more players like him), since the pictures yesterday from Paris, there is absolutely ZERO chance that reddit dude was no legit.

so let me present exhibit one, displaying the NEW categories, as are now in F5 and we saw in them yesterday's pics from paris

and exhibit two, from my private stash, since reddit entries were deleted.
how the reddit dude describes the new categories in F5.. enjoy ;)

now, dude said nurburgring with the f1 track connected, behemoth style, and also long beach.... PLAYABLE, back then!!

A.Penello and major Nelson, this thing is more up their turf than it is t10;s... or Helios's :PP

UPDATE: Dan Greenawalt, director of Turn 10, called to talk about this. He said that Forza 2, which launched 18 months after XBOX 360 launched, had 12 tracks and 270 cars, with a lot a variants. So Forza 5 already has more cars and tracks than Forza 2, which is one of their highest rated games.

Fans deserve the best content, so they rebuilt the cars from the ground up. They started with nothing, so nothing was "cut." They feel this will give a great experience to the next gen gamer. Look at it like GT3 to GT4, which added content on the same console.

They were working on Forza 5 a year before Forza 4 came out, so they were trying to make this a launch game. Dan loves this type of challenge. Nurburgring would have to be totally recaptured and rebuilt. The shortest track took 9 months to build in Forza 5, so longer tracks would take a really long time. We continue to capture tracks and will do so in the future. Everything that is totally built now is in the game.
http://jalopnik.com/forza-5-has-300-fewer-cars-than-forza-4-no-nurburgring-1460831891

we're proud to present to you now the complete Forza Motorsport 2 car list -- 310 gorgeous rides you'll be able to tune, mod, upgrade, paint, customize, auction, and completely make your own.
https://web.archive.org/web/20080317190625/http://forzamotorsport.net/news/announcements/carlist.htm

"We're looking at laser scanning of everything moving forward - that's what it comes down to," Greenawalt said of Turn 10's approach. "We want that to be the standard for next-generation. Our goal's not to carry old content over - and even with all the cars, we did the same process. There were some inaccuracies, and some cars were old-spec that we'd updated from Forza 2 to 3 to 4. But they didn't have the poly count where we wanted it - and they weren't as easy to up-res, so we just recaptured them. Some of them, the spec was good and we could add polygons where we needed them. So it came down to this rating system - and any track or car that wasn't an A grade got either chucked or recaptured."

Lens Flare, Godrays ~jackieeeee~

EDIT: I'm sure these probably aren't final, as technically there is a spelling error for one of the Ferrari's in the video, the progression on the points isn't quite right on the driver level achievos (Committed), and when I did the math, the #'s only add up to 975 GS.

But this is probably pretty close to what the achievos are going to look like in the released version, just slightly different I'd suspect.
