PlayStation Home

Home is beta until it hits "final quality"

PlayStation Home's current legal guardian, Peter Edward, has said the online social service thing will be in beta until it hits "a kind of final quality".

Asked how long the beta label would remain in an interview with Eurogamer, Edward said, "Until we're ready to not call it a beta any more. We don't really get that fixated about it. Anyone who wants to access Home can, there are no barriers to entry, so in that respect it's not like there's anything holding users back.

"We're still developing it, we're still working on it, we're still improving it. We'll remove the beta name when we're happy that it represents something that is not final, because it'll always be evolving, but at least represents a kind of final quality. We don't have a specific target for when that will be."

Sony doesn't have a list of criteria to meet before the beta label disappears either, Edward said. "We have more philosophical targets for when it should come out of beta," he explained.

Elsewhere in today's interview, Edward talked about Home's delayed launch, the reaction since, and issues like harassment and localisation.

MotorStorm Game Launching Crashes Into PlayStation Home, Fat Princess -

Ambles Slowly Behind…

Hi there guys – time for a PlayStation Home update…!

We have the first wave of MotorStorm content swerving into PS Home this Thursday with MotorStorm Pacific Rift Game Launching functionality topping the bill. If you don’t know what Game Launching is, click here for more info on how this great functionality works.

There will be more MotorStorm / PS Home news very soon, however in the mean time, have a look at the screenshots below for a tantalising snippet of some of the great MotorStorm content coming to PS Home over the coming weeks…

Next (and this is very exciting) as of tomorrow, we will be launching a new event in PS Home – the Fat Princess “Quest for Cake”.

Based upon the brilliant PSN title, all you have to do is visit the PlayStation Events Space to join in this very special confectionery quest.

In the fully redecorated space you will find eight pieces of cake, locked away in cages. To unlock the cake and feed your Princess you need to search the space high and low for clues, these clues will give you access to the finest gateaux and, eventually, her majesty’s waistline.

If you do manage to unlock all eight pieces of cake, and feed the Princess, a special PS Home reward will be yours – the Fat Princess’ very own throne for your personal apartment. Here are a few screenshots of the space to whet your appetite…

Last, (but by no means least!) there will be a few additional surprises in tomorrow’s publishing window (particularly revolving around the undead…) so be sure to log-in and check it out

I’ll be around for a while if you have any comments, otherwise I’ll see you in PS Home tomorrow unlocking slices of the finest black forest gateaux.

The Home Graveyard is Real

Prepare to walk amongst the dead...

Since its inception, there have been rumors of a mysterious graveyard in Home. Some folks claim to have been to its ghastly locale, only to return bruised, beaten and scarred, clinging onto the virtual life that they've spent so much time bowling and staring at trailers with.

Now, you too will see the horrors of a graveyard in Home as a Burn, Zombie, Burn!-themed zone is coming this Thursday. To find out more about the new space, we fired off a handful of questions to DoubleSix's game engineer, David Dow.

IGN: To start things off, can you give us an overview of what's in store for people who visit the graveyard?

David Dow: Well we've got a bunch of crypts to check out where you can watch the BZB trailer, enter our maze mini-game, or boogie like a zombie in the disco crypt. Then there's the wandering zombies, the shop, and generally speaking a cool looking, stylized, nighttime environment to hang out in. Oh, and there is of course fire, sort of.

IGN: Will you be able to customize anything in the graveyard, like perhaps set up your own gravestone in case your Home avatar ever meets an unfortunate end? 94% of accidents occur in the Home, you know.

David Dow: Not yet. Then again you never know what's around the corner. There is a rather natty Burn Zombie Burn t-shirt you can win by getting through the maze.

IGN: On that note, can the zombies turn you into a zombie yourself, or even kill you?

David Dow: Kill you, hmm, no. They can evict you though. Beware Zombie landlords!

IGN: How does the maze work, particularly with the zombies? If they touch you, do you automatically "lose"?

David Dow: Well you've got two minutes to try to reach the end of the maze – it's a hedge maze, but a low hedge maze, so you can see the zombies and any other players stumbling about around you. If you get caught by a zombie you're out, and it's time to try again. The zombies will attempt to follow you in their characteristically shambolic way, so you can always spice things up for other players by trying to lead them about like some kind of demented pied piper. They are quite short sighted though, poor zombies.

IGN: Had you thought about including other night-dwelling monsters in the graveyard, such as vampires or werewolves, perhaps? We know they're not in the game, but it would be cool to be able to become a vampire and then go to the arcade or mall, walk up behind someone and then bite them on the neck after saying, "I'm going to suck your blood!"

David Dow: Aye, sounds great, I can imagine that would really rev up those games of hide & seek in the mall, but sadly, no. On opening day we're sticking to zombies. Sorry. Entry will not be barred to vampires or werewolves should any show up.

IGN: We had a lot of fun with Burn Zombie Burn, but why bring the graveyard to Home now months after its launch?

David Dow: Zombie support is a time consuming and labor intensive vocation, we've been busy patching pieces of the recently dead together to bring you more fun and content. The home space is but the start, Burn Zombie Burn DLC will soon follow on its scabby heels.

IGN: Do you see it being as influential to Home and virtual spaces as Super Mario Bros. was to platformers?

David Dow: Super what? Never heard of it round these parts.

IGN: Any final thoughts you want to toss in before all of our brains are eaten?

David Dow: All your brains are belong to us. Dribble, dribble...
