THQ gives Devil’s Third rights back to Itagaki

THQ has returned all rights of Devil’s Third to creator Tomonobu Itagaki and his studio Valhalla.

The publisher confirmed to Eurogamer that the developer has retained all right following confirmation it was dropping the title.

“THQ confirms that the company will not be publishing Devil’s Third. All of the game’s IP rights have been returned to Itagaki-san and the Valhalla team.”

Itagaki had earlier told the latest issue of Famitsu Xbox 360 magazine that they now own the Devil’s Third IP.

“Most important thing is gamers’ happiness. And people in business side like distributers and presses. And developers. It’s a Happy Three. So we can’t thank THQ enough. Anyway, we now own the Devil’s Third IP,” he told Famitsu, in an interview translated by Eurogamer.

He also told the magazine how the game was in its final stages of development, and therefore in a critical phase.

“Devil’s Third development is in its final stage now, and is most expensive in this term. In the West, we need to spend a great deal for advertisements – as much as development cost – to sell a lot. But it wasn’t fit for [THQ's] mid-term plan.

“They didn’t want to part with this IP, but we all have to see into the future and at last they did, for us.

“We were anguished and they were really kind to us. Mr. Danny Bilson was searching for a way to work together until the very end. I do appreciate him and THQ managers that signed the transfer contract.”

Devil’s Third has been in development since 2009 at Valhalla. It was made official back in 2010.

[ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqWfcPfxnmc"]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqWfcPfxnmc[/ame]

Devil's Third underwent two engine switches before Unreal Engine 3. After a change to an engine by Relic, it eventually changed to Vigil's Darksiders II engine. The Unreal Engine 3 switch was most likely spurred by the company going defunct. There was still a time when Valhalla had a seeming level of autonomy in terms of self-producing while looking for a publisher and presumably that's when UE3 entered the picture. Itagaki originally wanted the game out in 2014 and going by most accounts it seems like Nintendo must have acquired the publishing rights some time late 2013 or early 2014.

I don't think the general aesthetic change of the game was brought on by Nintendo necessarily since during the reveal, Itagaki explained the full impetus of going with that particular stylistic approach and main character. Keep in mind that the debut trailer was revealed way back in 2010, only a year after Valhalla was established. Plenty of changes must have happened beyond just Nintendo within development

Siliconera can confirm the news from Unseen 64 that Nintendo of America will not publish Devil’s Third, an action game from Valhalla Game Studios. The good news is this won’t be the last story about Tomonobu Itagaki’s game in North America.

Siliconera has learned Devil’s Third will be released here by a publisher Siliconera readers are quite familiar with.

Devil’s Third is scheduled to come out on August 4 in Japan and August 28 in Europe. A North American release date has not been announced, but Valhalla’s mix of shooting and swordplay will blaze trails here too.

We still have a little way to go in the campaign, but so far it's been a messy, frustrating experience. There's a place in the world for dumb and linear action games that try to recreate an '80s action movie vibe - our complaints aren't about the superficiality of the experience. We enjoy some mindless fun, but it still needs to be well designed, polished and a pleasure to play. We don't feel like a modern day bad-ass Dolph Lundgren when playing Devil's Third - it doesn't draw us in. We feel like an irritated gamer who realises they could do something more productive with their time.

Devil's Third is shaping up to be one of the worst games Nintendo has ever published.

[Dear media guys and gamers]
It seems that the world is in disorder...no way. I feel that the informations on Devil's Third are tangled.
So I decided to tell you guys about the Specifications and recommended playing devices best suited for Devil's Third, plus useful infomation for you guys.
I felt the time has come for me to talk about.
[About the specifications of Devil's Third]
Frame rate: 30fps.
*note: I promise you can fully enjoy this MASSIVE shooter with 30 fps.
Split Screen: This game don't have split screen feature for both offline and online play. 'Cuz I used all the power of Wii U for single player. That was tough tradeoff for me. Plz understand.
Voice chat: We don't equip voice chat feature. 'Cuz we had maxed out its bandwidth to achieve online play by 16 users.
Yo Guys,
Don't disappoint, and don't be negative. I promise the wide/deep/brandnew playability for you guys today „sunglasses“-Emoticon
[Recommended Playing Devices]
Wii U of course „smile“-Emoticon
TV set.
PRO contoroller.
USB keyboard.
Wired Internet.
Thanks for your constant support for Devil's Third.
Let's make the future together!

Das ist ein schönes Beispiel dafür, warum Entwickler sowas der PR-Abteilung überlassen sollten."Cuz we had maxed out the bandwith" :D

.......ohne Worte.

"I never wanna discount standard tab-controller," he said, "But Devil's Third is a super speedy game. So [GamePad] has the following disadvantages: Four face buttons are positioned [to be overcrowded], so you easily press the wrong button. In that case, you will die.

"Distance of two analog sticks are too far apart, so it's quite difficult for you to feel/grasp the battlefield. Devil's Third is a game you play a long time, the standard [GamePad] is too heavy for such use."
Quelle

Tomonobu Itagaki has told Famitsu in a translated interview that Devil's Third represents a breakthrough for the industry, despite the recent backlash against the title.

"[Devil's Third is] a culmination of everything so far—not just mine, but of everyone that works here," said Itagaki. "Please try it for yourself. I think it's going to be a breakthrough for the industry. I believe it's going to take shooters to the next level."

Itagaki said that people really need to play the game in order to form an honest opinion; it is impossible to fully understand a game by reading about it.

"You played through the introduction, one very small part of the overall game," said Itagaki. "I wanted you to try it out because even though you can explain something in 1,000 or 10,000 words, there's no substitute for actually experiencing something yourself. One thing that I was careful about . . . I've made an A-class action game already with Ninja Gaiden, and Dead or Alive ranks up there with Tekken and Virtual Fighter."

"So when I became an independent developer, I started thinking about what kind of game I wanted to make. I thought it'd be pretty boring to make another fighting game or another hack-and-slash—life is short, you know? I decided I wanted to challenge myself in another genre. I had a really strong desire to make a completely new type of game. Sort of . . . a culmination of all my games up until now."
