Mortal Kombat Vita has exclusive Challenge Tower, touchscreen fatalities

Ed Boon has said the development team really “went to town” with front touchscreen interaction in the Vita version of Mortal Kombat, but decided against making use of the system’s reach touchscreen.

Speaking with the PS Blog, Booon said while the functionality of the rear touchscreen was experimented with, the team “ultimately opted not to pursue” its use, and instead put a lot of work into the controls and the front touchscreen.

“In terms of gameplay, we’ve always wanted MK to be as accessible as possible,” he said. “For example, you can touch your X-ray meter to execute an X-ray attack. For fatalities, you can slash the screen with the appropriate inputs — say, away, away, up — to execute the fatality. It makes some of the more difficult fatalities easier and it’s fun to slash at your screen to fire off a fatality.

“I was surprised by how engaging it is. There’s a lot of precision with the slicing mechanic, so it works well for fatalities.”

Book said the team looked into implementing a dedicated touchscreen-only mode for casual players, and while it was an “interesting novelty at first,” the team decided the normal control scheme would suffice for any level of play.

In the Vita version of the game, the entire Story Mode and all the downloadable characters and content from the original console game will be included, along with additional modes and features tailored for specifically for the handheld, such as and expanded Challenge Tower.

“The fundamental necessity is quick access to gameplay, whether it’s online or locally,” he said “The mobile gaming experience is shorter bites of time. We identified the Challenge Tower as a perfect fit for mobile sessions, so we expanded it greatly for PS Vita. There are actually two Challenge Towers in the PS Vita version, and the new one has 150 challenges that are exclusive to PS Vita.

“A number of those challenges use PS Vita’s hardware features: the touch screen, [and] the accelerometer. But in the new Challenge Tower, there are challenges that are unique to PS Vita’s capabilities. Over the years we’ve had Test Your Might, Test Your Luck, Test Your Sight…well, we’ve added two completely new ones for PS Vita. Those extra 150 Challenge Tower missions are tons of fun. Imagine tilting your PS Vita and affecting gravity in the game, things like that.

“We’ll be revealing those soon, and they will take advantage of the accelerometer and other features.”

Mortal Kombat is slated for release on Vita in the spring.

Q&A vom PS Blog:

PlayStation.Blog: What’s the scope of Mortal Kombat for PS Vita? Does it include all the content from the PS3 game?
Ed Boon, Creative Director, Netherrealm Studios: It’s actually everything from the PS3 game: the entire Story Mode and all the downloadable characters and content, plus additional modes and features that are tailored for PS Vita. We really wanted to take advantage of Vita’s hardware.

PSB: How have the graphics transitioned to PS Vita? Did you have to make any major graphical sacrifices from the PS3 version?
EB:It’s interesting. We did have to reduce some of the polygon counts from the backgrounds and characters, but that screen is so bright, and it’s got such high pixel density…when I saw Scorpion and Sub-Zero fighting on the Living Forest for the first time, I was amazed. It really maintains the identity of the game. I can’t wait for people to hold it in their hands and see it for themselves — it’s a surprisingly similar experience.

PSB: Will the PS Vita version keep the PS3 version’s smooth 60 fps framerate?
EB: Yeah. We wouldn’t accept any compromises there; we needed the game to run at the same framerate as the PS3 version. A number of our internal people proposed running it at 30 frames per second — “we could do this and this and that” — but we knew it would feel different. We didn’t want it to feel sluggish or unresponsive.

PSB: What makes a good mobile fighting game? Obviously, playing habits are different in a mobile environment.
EB: The fundamental necessity is quick access to gameplay, whether it’s online or locally. The mobile gaming experience is shorter bites of time. We identified the Challenge Tower as a perfect fit for mobile sessions, so we expanded it greatly for PS Vita. There are actually two Challenge Towers in the PS Vita version, and the new one has 150 challenges that are exclusive to PS Vita. A number of those challenges use PS Vita’s hardware features: the touch screen, the accelerometer…

PSB: …rear touchscreen?
EB: The rear touchscreen functionality was something that we experimented with, but we ultimately opted not to pursue. We really went to town on the front touchscreen interaction, though, both in the challenges and normal gameplay. A lot of work went into it.
Sehr positiv: 60fps war ihnen wichtiger als Grafikorgien (hallo Sony!) und der gesamte DLC ist schon im Spiel.
Soll auch infrastructure 1vs1 unterstützen.

Ed Boon tells us that handheld fighter will be WiFi only for online play.

Bad news for everyone out there who was hoping to take their online Mortal Kombat experience out into the wild, as the game's creative director Ed Boon told us at a Vita event last Friday in Toronto that the game will not support 3G functionality for online play.

When we quizzed him about the potential technical concessions that may need to be made in order to play a game like Mortal Kombat, which runs at 60 frames per second, over 3G his reply wasn't the one many prospective Vita 3G owners would have been hoping for.

Quote:
"You know what, Mortal Kombat runs at 60 frames per second and it's a very crisp game," he said. "The experience we had with 3G, unfortunately, wasn't one that we felt couldn't provide the type of experience people want to have. It's susceptible to external factors like where you are and what not. We really didn't want to present something to players that might be a bad experience, so we've restricted it just to WiFi and local connectivity."

Seh ich genauso wie Mekuri.
Da ich die PS3 Version habe, kann es für Vita noch warten. Aber die Vitafunktionen sind schon nett...

Mortal Kombat Vita has hidden MK3 costumes for Rain, Ermac

If you are a PS Vita owner and are still hungry for more new games, don’t forget that there is still the little matter of the Mortal Kombat port that will be making its way on to Sony’s new handheld in April.
NetherRealm Studios has just shown off the latest footage for the game and if you were previously not interested in picking this up, the new gameplay should provide you with all you need. We’ve told you before that the Vita version will feature brand new game modes suited for the Vita’s touchscreen, and now we have been given a much closer look at this thanks to the new footage.
In a clip which is reminiscent of a certain Fruit Ninja game on iOS, there will actually be an aspect of gameplay which will see you chopping up what looks to be various body parts by quickly swiping them as they appear on the screen. We can also see three bomb icons, so the obvious idea here will be to swipe the body parts as quickly as possible, avoiding the bombs as you go to rack up the best score.
The gameplay also reveals some further incentives that the Vita version will get which didn’t feature on the Xbox 360 or PS3 version. The most obvious comes at the end of the clip as you can see that Shao Kahn is a playable character, you can even perform fatalities by using touch commands as well if you prefer – a tad gimmicky, but a nice addition nevertheless.
Here’s what you may miss though if you just watch the trailer from start to finish. The Vita version also appears to bring some exclusive costumes for some of the characters as well. Pause at 0.23 and you’ll see a brand new costume for Kenshi which isn’t currently available on console. Perhaps more exciting for MK veterans, if you watch closely you’ll also see that NetherRealm Studios has teased classic MK3 costumes for Ermac and Rain, which look particularly awesome in our opinion.

Initial Impressions:

-The character select screen has been altered; Skarlet, Kenshi, Rain, and Freddy are now on the bottom row instead of "hidden" to the left/right of Kratos/Cyber Sub-Zero.

-Wifi offers ranked, player, and private match types. No lobby system.

-Tag mode is available online.

-Can't comment on the net code since barely anyone is online. The ranked leaderboards only have five people listed.

-Load time

-This game is most definitely not running at the full Vita resolution.

-Despite the lowered amount of detail, the game still looks good in motion and is running at a constant 60fps. No question that UMvC3 looks more impressive, however.

-Background animations have been reduced, but there are still things going on. It doesn't feel lifeless.

-All of the modes and options from the console versions are intact, including:

Arcade Ladder
Tag Team Ladder
Test Your Skills
Story Mode
Challenge Tower
Bonus Challenge Tower (new)
Tutorial
Fatality Tutorial
Practice
Tag Tea Practice
Wi-Fi Versus
Adhoc 1v1
Adhoc Tag
Krypt
Nekropolis
Kredits
Options

I spent a good amount of time with both the 360 and PS3 versions of MK last year. From what I can tell, all of the game play is intact and there's plenty of things to keep players busy. Yes, detail has been reduced, but the game plays exactly the same and the character models are very large on the screen. If the online play turns out well, I will be playing the krap out of this until SFxTK hits in the fall.
