Interview mit Vivaldi-Gründer Jon von Tetzchner

Mit dem bisherigen Erfolg seines Browsers zeigt sich von Tetzchner zufrieden: Mindestens zwei Millionen Nutzer hätten die Technical Previews von Vivaldi heruntergeladen. Besonders in Skandinavien, Deutschland, Polen und Russland sei der Browser gefragt – wie damals schon Opera. Geld will Vivaldi mit Suchmaschinenverträgen verdienen.

Bei Vivaldi soll es keine so schnellen Versionssprünge geben, wie es bei Chrome und Firefox der Fall ist. Das sei zwar "ein bisschen konservativ", aber die Versionsnummern sollten mehr aussagen als bei der Konkurrenz, so von Tetzchner. "Wir konzentrieren uns auf die Bedienoberfläche, und dafür halten wir eine etwas konservativere Versionsnummer für sinnvoll." Regelmäßige Sicherheits-Updates sollen als Unterversionen erscheinen.

Updates to Chrome platform support

Earlier this year, we announced that Google Chrome would continue support for Windows XP through the remainder of 2015. At that time, we strongly encouraged users on older, unsupported platforms such as Windows XP to update to a supported, secure operating system. Such older platforms are missing critical security updates and have a greater potential to be infected by viruses and malware.

Today, we’re announcing the end of Chrome’s support for Windows XP, as well as Windows Vista, and Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8, since these platforms are no longer actively supported by Microsoft and Apple. Starting April 2016, Chrome will continue to function on these platforms but will no longer receive updates and security fixes.

If you are still on one of these unsupported platforms, we encourage you to move to a newer operating system to ensure that you continue to receive the latest Chrome versions and features.

Vermutlich wird Google dann Änderungen in Chromium einchecken, die auch alle anderen Chromium-basierten Browser den Support von XP... schwer bis unmöglich macht.

(Unverbindliche) Antwort auf die Frage nach dem Support von WinXP... bei Firefox/Mozilla:

Ultimately this is a product decision, with input from various teams as to
what the cost of ongoing support is.

We still have a significant number of XP users, as well as new downloads
from XP users. IIRC both are in the 15% ballpark. We recently committed to
some infrastructure work to continue supporting even XPSP2 after SHA1 is
deprecated, so I think it's unlikely that we'd be dropping complete XP
support anytime soon.

I don't think we, the Firefox team, have a concrete plan. From what I can tell we don't go out of our way to support XP, Vista and those OS X versions. A lot of what we do is cross-platform to begin with (or cross-version when it's platform-specific) and mostly just works. There certainly is some overhead e.g. in the theme but I don't think it's a huge deal.

dev-platform sounds like the right forum to me, as I think this will be a decision driven by platform people (although somebody else may have the final say).

Vorsicht:

Auf einer unbekannten Zahl von Dell-Rechnern ist ein Dellzertifikat in Windows vorinstalliert. Damit könnte euch nur Dell böses, aber es kommt noch besser:
Auch der private Schlüssel dazu ist auf den Rechnern und damit public.

Damit kann ein Angreifer dann z.B. SSL/TLS Verbindungen in Chrome übernehmen.

Bei einem Schnelltest konnte heise Security das CA-Zertifikat tatsächlich auf Anhieb auf einem Test-Notebook von Dells Consumer-Marke Alienware nachweisen. Ein schnell eingerichteter Man-in-the-Middle-Proxy mit der eDell-Root-CA konnte dann auch sofort alle verschlüsselten Verbindungen mitlesen – etwa die zu Microsofts Bing oder der Deutschen Bank. Die komplette SSL/TLS-Verschlüsselung war damit nur noch schöner Schein. Egal ob Online-Banking, Passwort-Eingaben, Software-Downloads: Jeder Angreifer mit Zugang zum Netzwerkverkehr des Systems kann das alles fast beliebig mitlesen oder sogar manipulieren.

Damit ist die fragwürdige Dell-CA nicht nur ein Privatsphären-Problem sondern ein veritables Sicherheitsloch von bislang kaum abschätzbarem Ausmaß. Schließlich ist Dell einer der größten Hardware-Hersteller und das CryptoAPI nutzen fast alle Windows-Programme, inklusive Internet Explorer, Edge und Chrome. Prominente Ausnahmen sind Mozillas Firefox und Thunderbird, die einen eigenen Zertifikatsspeicher mitbringen.

Mozilla will Firefox-Funktionen streichen

Die Downgrades gehen weiter:

Firefox soll schlanker und schneller werden – deshalb will Mozilla einige Funktionen aus dem Browser entfernen. Zuerst betroffen sind die "Tab-Gruppen" sowie die "vollständigen Themes".

Ich hoffe ja immer noch die scheitern mit dem Plan XUL/XPCOM zu entfernen. Wäre für Seamonkey wohl sehr schwer das alleine weiter zu pflegen.

Das ist für mich einer der Gründe, nicht zu Chrome zu wechseln. Wenn man das als Plugin nachrüsten kann, gut, wenn nicht, :cry:.

Sehr oft kommt als Antwort: Kannst doch per Add-On nachrüsten.
Imo nicht befriedigend wenn man erst haufenweise Extensions nachrüsten muss, deren Qualität und Fortentwicklung nicht gesichert ist.

Noch kann man am Browser so ziemlich alles per Add-On ändern - wenn sie XUL entfernen geht genau das nicht mehr. Nur noch das was die (vermutlich stark eingeschränkte) Schnittstelle erlaubt.

OneTab mal ausprobieren, das sollte auch nach Ende von XUL noch möglich sein, im Chrome funktioniert es ja auch.

Mozilla will Thunderbird nun endgültig los werden. Zusammen mit dem angekündigten Ende von XUL könnte das eine sehr schwere Zukunft werden.
Auch für Seamonkey sind dies keine gute Nachrichten.

Also Vivaldi ist eigentlich recht gut. Fehlen halt noch elementare Dinge wie Zoomstufe festlegen oder Adblocker was die ganze Sache recht unkomfortabel macht.

Finanziell bisher nicht, aber der Marktanteil ist deutlich zurückgegangen, was die Machtposition bei irgendwelchen Marketingdeals natürlich verschlechtert.


Leider wird/wurde viel Geld in zahlreichen fragwürdigen Projekten verbraten während man für Dinge wie Thunderbird, Seamonkey sich auf das minimalste beschränkt bzw. diese am liebsten los werden will.

(Since it is getting late, I'm copying and pasting what I wrote in the newsgroup post. I apologize for not taking the time to make a decent post, but it is past my bed time. :P )

After so long a delay, for which we apologize, the SeaMonkey
Project is pleased to announce the release of SeaMonkey 2.40!

Please note that the website information, while updated for
2.40, still requires a bit more work.

We cannot repeat this enough. Thank you everyone for your
patience with us. This very long delay due to infrastructure
and resource issues has been very trying on a lot of people.

It has been a very tough release. I think it's the
toughest one I've done. However, this isn't to say that
I did this alone. Kudos go to a lot of people, particularly
the guys/gals in Mozilla's IT and RelEng dept.

I particularly want to thank Nick Thomas for his sheer
brilliant idea that helped me unhork the partial mar upload
script as well as pointing out the necessary changes
to migrate off FTP to S3.

Thanks to Jens Hatlak for taking the time to do the Website
patch. (Really, sorry for the delay.)

Also, thanks to Justin Wood for giving me this opportunity
to work out the problems myself. If you all take a look
at bug 1233615, I think I rivaled the mess I did with
the GTK bug (conveniently forgotten the # :P ). The
repo changes I made... oh boy. Only time will heal
the mess^H^H^H^H wounds. ;P

Anyway, most of all, thanks to all the users out there
for hanging on to this project. The words of encouragement
(especially during the broken-hand period) definitely gave
me a boost of energy.

Oh. Before I forget and in the light of being transparent,
there is a chance I might have goofed something up, especially
during the 2.39 Win32 builds as well as the 2.40 builds and
also the partial mar and complete mar updates. I hope I
didn't screw things up too much, if at all (here's hoping).
Please do post here on your findings.
