While we've known for a long time that Wipeout HD is on the way for the PlayStation 3, Sony was kind enough this morning to reveal some details about the latest entry in its futuristic racing series.
Obviously with a name like Wipeout HD one would expect that the game would be a feast for the eyes - Sony claims that the game will support 1080p and run at a very smooth 60 frames per second. The game will also support 5.1 audio.
In terms of actual gameplay, Wipeout HD will be made up of tracks featured in the five previous Wipeout titles, remodelled from the ground up to showcase the increased resolution and visual fidelity. A new feature called "the Mag Strips" will lock your vehicle to the track, allowing for new course obstacles such as loops, verticle drops and 90 degree turns. Wipeout HD will also allow players to opt for SIXAXIS motion control options for those fed up with analogue sticks.
Sony assures us that Wipeout HD will be packed with content for both single player and multiplayer. For solo players, the Race Campaign mode is packed with events to test one's racing prowess. Seven play modes and three difficulty levels, along with the rules customisation feature should provide much in the way of entertainment. For those that like human opponents, Wipeout HD will allow up to 8 players to go head to head over PSN in single races, tournaments, elimination and team races. There will be extensive stat tracking for multiplayer games and a bevy of additional downloadable content over time.
While Wipeout HD doesn't have a solid release date yet, Sony assures us that the game will be available on PSN before the end of 2007.
